Academy status - should you go for it?

20 Oct 2010

The latest programme in my Need To  Know series on Teachers TV offers detailed and unbiassed advice to school leaders, teachers and governors who are unsure whether or not to seek academy status.

I visit Watford Grammar School for Boys - one of the 32 schools to convert to academies by the start of this term - to find out why they made the leap and to ask what difference it has made to them.

I also return to a north London federation of primary schools where the Executive Head (who decided not to convert over the summer) is still undecided about the advantages of becoming an academy.

Muslim Academies

There are hundreds of state primary and secondary schools where Muslim pupils are in majority. In my opinion all such schools may be opted out to become Muslim Academies. This mean the Muslim children will get a decent education. Muslim schools turned out balanced citizens, more tolerant of others and less likely to succumb to criminality or extremism. Muslim schools give young people confidence in who they are and an understanding of Islam’s teaching of tolerance and respect which prepares them for a positive and fulfilling role in society.
