School building design
12 Nov 2009
I've just been to a fascinating conference on innovative school building design, held - appropriately - in an impressive new-build school in Knowsley on Merseyside.
There were mixed messages. The good news is that good school design can have a hugely positive impact on pupil behaviour, motivation and achievement.
The more gloomy news is that the cash for the current school rebuilding programme in England is likely to start to dry up after the election, whoever forms the next government.
However, the conference heard that much can be done at relatively modest cost to transform traditional schools buildings into far more effective environments for learning.
I shall be writing about this for my BBC News Online column this weekend.
