OECD case for investment in education
11 Sep 2009
This week's OECD 'Education at a Glance, 2009' is a timely - and convincing - reminder of the dangers of cutting education spending in the months ahead.
It shows that despite a good record on increasing education spending since from 2000 to 2007, the UK is still falling behind other countries which are investing in their systems at a faster rate.
We are making progress on most educational outputs - with the shameful exception of participation rates amongst 15-19 year-olds where we are making no progress - but others are moving ahead more quickly.
It should be compulsory reading for all Treasury and Shadow Treasury ministers.
I have written more for this week's Saturday column on the BBC News website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/default.stm
