Sir Bobby Robson
31 Jul 2009
Please excuse a non-education blog... but I cannot let pass without comment the very sad news about Sir Bobby, a great former Ipswich Town manager (I think he also went on to manage a side called England).
Despite a bad start, when he apparently had fisticuffs with my then hero - centre-half Bill Baxter - he soon turned Ipswich from a good Division Two team into a UEFA-cup winning outfit which, more importantly, played great football with the likes of Beattie, Whymark, Viljoen, Mills and Hunter.
I met him once on the touchline when be brought a youthful Ipswich team to play Cambridge University (I was then doing sports reporting for the student paper). He was charming and interested to know more about the university.
He also pointed out a teenage full-back in his side and predicted a great future for this, as yet, unknown player. He was George Burley, as stylish a defender as you'll ever see and of course future Ipswich manager (and he also went on to manage a team called Scotland).
Thank you for the memories, Sir Bobby.
