Marc's fantastic cancer run result

18 Sep 2011

My heartfelt congratulations to Marc Rowland for a fantastic double result: finishing 5th in the River Kwai Half Marathon in Thailand and raising around £1,000 for cancer charities.

If you recall, Marc had generously offered to run the half-marathon in behalf of two cancer charities, one chosen by me and one by another of his friends, Kate, who has also been diagnosed with cancer.

The run involved Marc in travelling all the way to Thailand, at his own expense, and just for a single weekend. He had to get up at 04.30 for the day of the race, having been unable to sleep the night before. Despite this, not to mention running in temperatures exceeding 32 degrees Celsius, Marc achieved a fantastic 5th place (out of 342 runners) in a time of 1 hour 28 minutes. The full official results are here: results.championchip-thailand.com/rkh2011/show2.asp

Marc reckons he has raised somewhere between £800 and £1,000 for the two charities, and certainly over £1,000 if everyone who has pledged support follows through with payment.

My chosen charity was Starthrowers, a small but wonderful integrated cancer care charity in Wymondham, Norfolk that is  staffed wholly by volunteers: www.starthrowers.org.uk/  The other charity Marc raised money for was the Royal Surrey Appeal: www.royalsurreyappeal.nhs.uk/

Good luck

Mike, just to say that I keep reading the updates and wanted to pass on my continuing good wishes. I hope the next scan result is good. Thanks for passing on the news, and glad you had a good month in the country. With very best wishes

Steve
